Thought-full Thursday: Listen
Thought-full Thursday is a new feature on this site. It will be very brief, a quote or brief passage followed with some thoughtful questions. Feel free to respond to the questions here, or to simply to reflect and revel in the beauty of the questions that you don’t know the answers to. Why am I doing this on a site dedicated to leadership? Because all leaders can use a little more thought and silence in their lives.
“We know the experience of being listened to by painfully experiencing its opposite.” ~ unknown
- Recall a time when you felt listened to. What did you feel? Where did you feel it?
- What is the personal value for you when you listen? How do others value from your listening?
- What distractions prevent you from listening?
- What beliefs keep you from listening?
- What will it take for you to turn away from the distractions and change your beliefs so that you really listen?

Mary Jo, I love this new series on listening. I like how you’ve tied Listening Parts I and II with your new Thought-full Thursday concept, which is also great. I’m choosing to reflect on the questions, rather than posting responses as a comment, which really wouldn’t mean anything to anyone else anyway.
And even better than these first three posts in the series is the promise of “How to Listen Better” next week. I hope you’ll expand this concept to other topics. Even if you don’t, please continue Thought-Full Thursday. This site might provide some thought-starters for you: http://tinybuddha.com/
Hi Kate,
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. If you choose to reflect I’ve done my job. Thought-Full Thursday will definitely continue for an unspecified period of time. I like to consider part of my mission as getting leaders to reflect. Finding a way to do so on this site is part of that.
I love this, Mary Jo…
1. In my heart and whole body.
2. Connection and inspiration.
3. My opinions, my ego, my self importance.
4. I stop listening when I think others are too opinionated, full of ego and self importance. (Cool mirror, eh?)
5. Giving up #3 and adding curiosity and love of our common humanity.
So nice to meet this part of you!
*felt respected
*Get to know others perspective and share knowledge.
*Negligence.
*False prestige and bragging.
*Humility.
Thanks for the questions Mary Jo. They really helped me in evaluating myself.
Lisa and Samson,
I am humbled that you were both willing to share your own thoughts publicly. I hope you will stop by in future Thought-full Thursdays and add your wisdom. Thank you.
