Thought-full Thursday: Freedom

Every Thursday, we provide you with a thoughtful way to coach yourself – something all leaders need to do. So take five, enjoy the quote and reflect on the questions that follow. Your comments and answers to the questions are always welcome!

If you want to be a leader….

stop trying to control.

let go of fixed plans and concepts,

And the world will govern itself.

The more prohibitions you have,

the less virtuous people will be.

The more weapons you have,

the less secure people will be.

The more subsidies you have,

the less self-reliant people will be.

Therefore the Master says:

I let go of the law,

and people become honest.

I let go of economics,

and people become prosperous.

I let go of religion,

and people become serene.

I let go of all desire for the common good,

and the good becomes common as grass.

~ from the Tao Te Ching, 600 B.C. China

  • What is it that you are clinging so tightly to?
  • Recall what it means to have a sense of freedom. How might you help your followers experience freedom?

I am a former executive in a Fortune 100 company. I have owned and operated an executive coaching firm since 2003 called Aspire Collaborative Services LLC. We partner with great leaders to help them become even greater at developing, improving, and sustaining relationships with the people who are essential to their success. This blog is for leaders and those who help them to be more intentional about relationships at work. My top personal values include respect for others, kindness, compassion, collaboration and gratitude. I work very hard at practicing my values daily and when I don’t succeed, I practice some more. I am married with two wonderful daughters and two spoiled pugs.
