Meredith, I think its wonderful that you are working on listening and having meaningful conversations. Unfortunately, this powerful act is often the first to go in our busy lives. I'm sure it will have a great impact. I'd love to hear about the results!

I totally agree with your point about the need to strengthen relationships with the people you work with. One thing I've tried to do is listen more. Even though my brain wants to focus on the project at hand, I've consciously worked on setting aside time to have meaningful conversations with people on my team. When they feel heard, understood and cared for, it makes a big difference in how they feel about their work and themselves.

Jonathan,

If I'll that I've done is to remind you of the importance of small talk and reinforcing relationships with it, then I've done what I set out to do. Thanks for "listening" and being intentional.

Well put; the people you work with - and your relationship with them - can help soften even the most hated tasks. What am I doing? Great question. I don't think I ever consciously considered the importance of small-talk. We all have the water coolers, the office of a sociable co-worker, and simply starting task-related conversations with some genuine small-talk. Participative decision-making should go hand-in-hand with great relationships and I know I would do well to keep both in mind a little more often. Thanks for the reminder!
